Energy drinks will help grow Saudi Arabia’s soft drinks market by 8% a year, according to reports.

Malt drinks and flavoured dairy products will also boost sales as new categories seep into the kingdom, the Saudi Gazette reported, citing research from Kantar Worldpanel. Kantar also said the new high-growth categories are fragmenting the Saudi beverage market.

However, Kantar added: “Though the ‘newer formats’ are gaining momentum, these categories are more inclined towards expats who seems to be the early adopters. Locals still prefer traditional beverages like coffee, concentrates and laban.”

Laban is a cold beverage of yoghurt mixed with water and salt.

Saudi Arabia has a population of 28m, which grows at 3% a year, or three times the global average, the report said.

Wine consumption in Italy fell to a record low last year, but exports are at an all-time high, new figures show.

Levels in the country last year dropped by 2% year-on-year in 2012, meaning wine consumption in the last decade has dived by 22%, farmer’s group Coldiretti said on Saturday (6 April). The figures mark the lowest level since unification in the 19th Century.

The Italian population consumed 22.6m hectolitres of wine last year, the figures revealed. This compares to 29m hectolitres drunk in the US in 2012, and 30.3m hectolitres in France.

An online survery, conducted by Coldiretti, found that 32% of Italy’s population only drink wine on “special occasions”, while 18% have one or two glasses a week. And 6% of respondents said they never drink wine.

However, Italian wine exports hit a record EUR4.7bn (US$6.11bn) in 2012. Italy remains the world’s largest exporter of wine, according to Coldiretti, with around one in five bottles produced sold abroad. Exports to Germany, which is the second largest market after the US, rose by 4% last year.

According to figures last month, however, European winemakers lost out in volume terms to US firms in 2012 through exports.

Villa Maria’s Charlotte Read is passionate about the potential for New Zealand sauvignon blanc to make a significant impact in the Chinese premier wine market.

“We are known as producing the benchmark standard of sauvignon blanc wine and we need to capitalise on that premium position in market,” says Read.

New Zealand primarily exports sauvignon blanc to China which means a special effort is necessary to cut-through a market dominated by red wine.

Read – who is Villa Maria’s market manager for Asia and the Middle East – says a definite demand for New Zealand wine is emerging right across the industry. “Hawkes Bay wine growers say China is their biggest global export market for red wines and they’re having great success.”

Villa Maria’s own sales in China are dominated by white wines, with sauvignon blanc responsible for 70 per cent of total sales. (more…)

Sixteen professional wine judges have done much of the hard work for us. They sifted through 800 wines at last month’s Great Northwest Wine Competition held at the historic Columbia Gorge Hotel in Hood River, Ore.

Ο «Θρακικός Ροδίτης 2001» ήταν το πρώτο κρασί που η Οικογένεια Βουρβουκέλη εμφιάλωσε και κυκλοφόρησε στο εμπόριο. Ο Ροδίτης 2011, δέκα χρόνια μετά είναι κατά κάποιον τρόπο η εξέλιξη αυτού του κρασιού, που προς το παρόν προορίζεται μόνο για τις αγορές του εξωτερικού.

Χρώμα μέτριο λεμονί. Με μέτρια προς υψηλή αρωματική ένταση, φέρνει στην μνήμη ένα μπουκέτο χαμομηλιού βουτηγμένο σε χυμό λεμονιού, όπου τα ανθικά και βοτανικά αρώματα του γιασεμιού, χαμομηλιού, φασκόμηλου και μεσογειακού κέδρου, πρωτοστατούν και συνοδεύονται από αυτά των εσπεριδοειδών (λεμόνι, πορτοκάλι, περγαμόντο) ενώ το κρασί τελειώνει με αρώματα εξωτικών φρούτων, όπως ο γλυκός ανανάς και το πεπόνι. Στο στόμα είναι ξηρό, με υψηλή «τραγανή» οξύτητα και σώμα μέτριο προς γεμάτο, που αρωματικά και εδώ χαρακτηρίζεται από έντονα αρώματα χαμομηλιού τα οποία περιπλέκονται με αρώματα εσπεριδοειδών (λεμόνι, φλούδα κίτρου), σε συνδυασμό με τα φρουτώδη αρώματα του ανανά, ενώ όσο περνάει η ώρα αναπτύσσει αρώματα φρέσκου (στυφού) κυδωνιού μαζί με νύξεις γκρέιπφρουτ και μεσογειακών βοτάνων (μαντζουράνα, μάραθος) πάνω σε ασβεστολιθικό υπόστρωμα (ορυκτότητα). Η επίγευση του είναι βοτανική μακράς διάρκειας. Θα συνεχίσει να εξελίσσεται για τα επόμενα 2 έτη. Συνόδεψε κοτόπουλο λεμονάτο με λαχανικά. Αλκοόλ: 12%
