Wine Hound on the Trail

I was contacted recently by a new online retailer called winehound.co.uk. They asked if I would like to sample the selection of their wines featured below. In fact Wine Hound has been around since 2007, but until recently its business was supplying wines to UK hotels and restaurants. The company now supplies over 450 lines to thousands of customers from its base close to Heathrow Airport. Now available to retail buyers via their web site, they aim to deliver all orders within 48 hours. Orders over £100 are delivered free, otherwise a delivery charge of £5.95 per case applies.

Azabache, Rioja Crianza Organic 2008, Spain
This organically certified wine is made from 60% Tempranillo, 30% Garnacha and 10% Graciano grown in Rioja Baja. It pours a deep crimson red from its screwcapped bottle, and the nose offers overtly fruity aromas, rich with Christmas cake spice, cherry and some prune and plum. The oak adds a touch of vanilla and cedarwood in the background. On the palate it is creamy and sweet, the richness of the black berry fruit again the driving force, with plenty of texture and concentration and a nice, spicy support from the tannins, oak and acidity. A biggish Rioja at 14% ABV, and a very nice one too. 90/100. £10.95 Rietvallei, Shiraz / Petit Verdot / Viognier 2009, South Africa (more…)

Rare wines, the Diamond Creek Vineyards Volcanic Hill cabernets from the 1970s and 1980s, at St. Helena’s Press restaurant wine cellar in California. The winery was founded in 1968, five years before Joseph Phelps.

Colorado construction magnate Joseph Phelps arrived in the Napa Valley in the late 1960s to build someone else’s winery. In 1973 he ended up founding his own.

Climate Change Means Idaho And New Zealand Could Be The Next Big Wine Regions: Study

A good bottle of Bordeaux could become scarce by 2050, thanks to global warming.

New research projects that in the coming decades, climate change will shrink the amount of land available for wine production at the same time that a growing and more affluent world population clamors for more and finer vintages. This tension could wreak substantial havoc on biodiversity hotspots and suck up fresh water resources, scientists wrote in a paper published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences on Monday.

What is the Most Expensive Bottle of Wine? The owner of Suburban Wine & Spirits in Yorktown says the bottle is generally bought as an investment.

 
The most expensive bottle of wine at Suburban Wine & Spirits in Yorktown costs $5,000. That’s according to store owner Lance Cerutti, who told Patch there is just one bottle of wine in stock. Credit Plamena Pesheva

The Screaming Eagle cabernet sauvignon, which comes from California, retails for $1,800 per bottle and can be purchased in a set of three bottles – all three packaged in a box. The cost for that is $5,400.
