The OIV catalogues 6,154 vine varieties in the world
OIV -12/07/2013- The International Organisation of Vine and Wine, OIV, has updated the compilation of reference lists of vine varieties and their synonyms.
The current database contains a total of 6,154 different varieties in 35 States, including members of the Organisation and other non-member countries that also provided information on the different varieties of vine in their vineyards.
Compared with the previous version, five new countries were added to the 2013 OIV list of vine varieties: Russian Federation, Uruguay, Luxembourg, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Georgia.
In addition, other Member States, namely Portugal, France, Argentina, Romania and Switzerland, and a non-member country, Japan, updated their lists by deleting or adding new varieties.
The annual normative publication of the OIV, “International list of vine varieties and their synonyms”, reflects the Organisation’s interest in diversity. As a reference scientific and technical organisation and standardisation body at an international level, the OIV evaluates and selects quality information for rigorous analysis.
