Belvedere Vodka adds light-up bottle to range

LVMH-owned Belvedere Vodka has added a light to the bottom of its 1.75 litre bottles to make the drink stand out in nightclubs. 

The single use LED, encased in waterproof plastic, fully lights up the bottle when switched on and is designed to offer an incentive for consumers to trade up to the larger format. The illuminated design was previously only available on three litre bottles. In the off-trade the 1.75 litre bottle has an rsp of £84.99.

 

“Belvedere Vodka, the world’s first super premium vodka, is continuing to showcase its ability to inject excitement and edge into the night with the new illuminated 175cl bottle and offer on-trade customers another way to help stimulate sales. The bottle not only looks great in the bottle parade but also in the ice buckets and we think this is going to be a must have item on the nightclub scene,” said senior brand manager Nick Ambridge.

Bibendum introduces exclusive sherries after extensive search

Bibendum has launched its first exclusive sherries for over a decade after searching for more than two years.

Nine sherries have been added to the portfolio from three different producers: Lustau in Jerez, Bodegas Delgado Zuleta in Sanlúcar de Barrameda and Bodegas Alvear from Montilla-Moriles.

Stuart Grundy, Director of Buying for the northern hemisphere, said: “We had been looking for the right partnership for a long time and then, rather like London buses, three fantastic opportunities came along at once.

“What is particularly pleasing is the way the producers complement each other. Lustau brings the very best of Jerez, including the superb La Ina brand; Delgado Zuleta, with its Rodriguez La Cave label, is one of the finest producers of manzanilla; and Alvear makes incredible, unique wines that really showcase the brilliance of the Montilla-Moriles region.”

Bibendum’s partnership with Lustau sees it take over distribution of three established brands that Lustau acquired from Domecq in 2008: La Ina Fino, Botaina Dry Amontillado and Rio Viejo Dry Oloroso.

It is importing three outstanding manzanillas from the family-owned Delgado Zuleta: Barbiana Manzanilla and Goyesco Amontillado, which are sold under the Rodriguez La Cave label, and the Delgado Zuleta Manzanilla Goya XL En Rama.

Also family-owned, Bodegas Alvear is the oldest winery in Montilla-Moriles and is famed for its intense Pedro Ximénez sweet wines – Bibendum is importing two of them along with a fino.

Bibendum managing director Michael Saunders said: “Our customers are constantly challenging us to find new, interesting wines and this trio of new producers certainly meets that requirement. These additions give us a brilliant range of traditional sherries, as well as some unique wines that will really excite consumers and help bring the category to an ever greater audience.

“We have already seen strong interest from both the on-trade and independent merchants, and expect these wines to be a huge success.”

Smirnoff vodka launches TV ad campaign

Smirnoff will return to our TV screens this month with the second round of its Nocturnal Awakening ad campaign. The £2.5 million campaign focuses on consumers trying new things and will include TV, digital and POS, as well as targeted on and off-trade activity.

Smirnoff will also be launching Slumberfest this May – a “fun and interactive nightlife experience” that will feature over-sized four-poster beds and retro gaming areas in seven different cities in the UK.

The vodka producer has also introduced “innovative drink tins”, which it claims will encourage consumers to “drink more inventively”. The tins will be available to customers who purchase a bottle of Smirnoff in selected off-trade outlets.

Patron Spirits has launched extra Añejo Tequila, Gran Patrón Piedra, initially as a travel retail exclusive.

The brand is being produced by the ‘Tahona’ process, Patron said. This involves steam-cooked agava being crushed with a large Tahona stone wheel. The resulting juice is then fermented and distilled along with the agave fibre.

John McDonnell, international president & COO of Patrón Spirits said: “Travel retail represents an important and significant sales channel for us, and we’re excited to make this exquisite spirit available first to our valued duty free partners and consumers.”

McDonnell took on the role of international president for Patron earlier this year.

Saudi Arabia’s population is growing fast

Energy drinks will help grow Saudi Arabia’s soft drinks market by 8% a year, according to reports.

Malt drinks and flavoured dairy products will also boost sales as new categories seep into the kingdom, the Saudi Gazette reported, citing research from Kantar Worldpanel. Kantar also said the new high-growth categories are fragmenting the Saudi beverage market.

However, Kantar added: “Though the ‘newer formats’ are gaining momentum, these categories are more inclined towards expats who seems to be the early adopters. Locals still prefer traditional beverages like coffee, concentrates and laban.”

Laban is a cold beverage of yoghurt mixed with water and salt.

Saudi Arabia has a population of 28m, which grows at 3% a year, or three times the global average, the report said.

Ο master distiller του Angostura ρούμι,  John Georges, είπε ότι το ρούμι έχει τη δυνατότητα να είναι εξίσου «σοφιστικέ», όπως το σκοτσέζικο ουίσκι και το κονιάκ.

Ο Georges, δήλωσε: «Είμαστε σε θέση να είμαστε «σοφιστικέ». Οι άνθρωποι πρέπει να γνωρίζουν ότι, στα ντουλάπια με τα ποτά τους, μαζί με ένα καλό ουίσκι και ένα καλό κονιάκ χρειάζονται ένα καλό ρούμι ».

Μίλησε κατά την έναρξη της γευσιγνωσίας Angostura  «Legacy», στο εστιατόριο Mosimann στο κεντρικό Λονδίνο, την Τετάρτη 3 Απριλίου.

Το ρούμι, ένα μείγμα από επτά ρούμι τουλάχιστον 17 ετών, είναι το πιο ακριβό στον κόσμο, κάθε μια από τις 20 κρυστάλλινες καράφες κοστίζει 25.000 δολάρια ΗΠΑ ανά τεμάχιο.

Μόνο μια είναι διαθέσιμη στο Ηνωμένο Βασίλειο,  μέσω της Burn Stewart Distilleries. Μια περιορισμένη ποσότητα είναι επίσης διαθέσιμη στο μπαρ του Salvatore Calabrese,  στη λέσχη Playboy.

The Sophisticated Side of Tequila A grown-up’s guide to celebrating Cinco de Mayo.

Cinco de Mayo–which commemorates the 1862 victory of the Mexican army over the French­—not   Mexico’s Independence Day, as many mistakenly believe—is a day to celebrate Mexico’s heritage. And that rich heritage includes Tequila, the blue agave-based spirit made in Mexico’s hilly Jalisco province.

Sure, in the United States, the liquor is often pigeonholed as the stuff of machine-made margaritas, or the potent party elixir of spring breakers and roughneck barflies.

But if you think you know Tequila, think again.

“It’s very suprising to me that some people don’t even realize Tequila is the spirit of Mexico,” says Courtenay Greenleaf, Tequila Librarian at New York’s La Biblioteca. (And yes. That is in fact her very cool title.) “They just think it’s a cheap shooter from their college days. They aren’t even aware you can sip Tequila and Mezcal very much the same way you would a Cognac or a Scotch.”

Indeed, well-made, high-quality Tequila can be incredibly complex and nuanced, ranging from the light, honeyed and citrusy notes of the clear-like-water, blanco styles to the deeper, smokier cocoa and caramel flavors of the golden-colored reposado styles.

In short, whether enjoyed neat or mixed into a modern cocktail, this potent elixiir not only deserves another try, it deserves significant space on your top shelf.

Here are a few delicious upscale Tequila drinks and bottles to try—on this May 5th and beyond.


First Word

What could be easier than this Tequila riff on the classic Last Word cocktail? Both drinks are made with equal measures of their ingredients.

1 ounce Reposado Tequila
1 ounce Esprit de June liqueur
1 ounce Yellow Chartreuse
1 ounce lemon juice
Lemon slice, for garnish

In a cocktail shaker, combine all ingredients with ice. Shake well, and strain into a coupe glass. Garnish with a lemon slice.

 


The Tijuana Gigolo

This drink, which bears a passing resemblance to the classic Diablo cocktail, is one of the most popular summer cocktails at Las Perlas.

3 fresh blackberries
¾ ounce blanco Tequila
1 ounce Amaro CioCiaro (Cynar may be substituted)
½ ounce Pierre Ferrand Dry Orange Curaçao
2 dashes Regan’s Orange Bitters No. 6
¾ ounce lime juice
Ginger beer for topping
Orange twist and blackberry, for garnish

In a cocktail shaker, muddle three blackberries. Add the Tequila, amaro, orange Curaçao, bitters, lime juice and ice. Shake and dump out the contents of the shaker (including the ice) into a tall Collins glass. Top with ginger beer and garnish with a fresh blackberry and orange twist.


Mayan Concubine

The Tequila’s light pepper notes and bitters perfectly balance out this simple, fruit-forward mixer. The tasty result can often make this drink disappear rather quickly.

2 ounces Partida Reposado
¾ ounce lemon juice
½ ounce Rothman & Winter Apricot Liqueur
½ ounce simple syrup
1 dash Angostura bitters
Lemon peel, for garnish

In a cocktail shaker, combine all ingredients with ice. Shake vigorously, and strain into a coupe glass. Garnish with a twist of lemon peel.

 


Midnight Luna

This deep-hued drink is “like our Tequila Manhattan,” Greenleaf says.

1½ ounces Riazul Añejo Tequila
1½ ounces hibiscus syrup (such as Toriani)
1½ ounces sweet vermouth
½ ounce lemon juice
Lemon twist, for garnish

In a cocktail shaker, combine all ingredients with ice. Shake well, and strain into a rocks glass over fresh ice. Garnish with a lemon twist.

 


Tequilas too good to mix

Sure, these Tequilas can go in a cocktail. But each is smooth and flavorful enough for straight-up sipping.

98 Tequila Don Julio 1942. A stunning limited-edition añejo. The golden color and caramel scent hint at what’s to come: sweet agave flavor, a lingering whisper of smoke, and mellow notes of tropical fruit, Sauternes and butterscotch. Diageo Americas.

96 Siete Leguas Reposado. An all-around favorite for sipping or mixing, this highlands Tequila has an almost whiskey-like feel. Pale straw hue, with lightly smoky and herbaceous flavors finishing with a hint of vanilla. Gemini Spirits and Wine.

95 Cazul 100 Tequila Añejo Reserva. Consider this dessert-like añejo for after-dinner sipping. The fruity, luscious flavors run to baked pears and bananas drizzled with honey, although it retains a piquant peppery note, too. Deutsch Family Wines & Spirits.

95 Partida Elegante Extra Añejo Tequila. Seeking a splurge or a special gift bottle? This super-smooth, limited-edition extra añejo is aged up to 40 months. The flavors evolve with every sip: an initial flurry of black pepper, sprightly jalapeño and vanilla settles into warm, mellow crème brûlée. Partida Tequila.

93 Corzo Tequila Silver. A clean, lean Tequila with an herbal, grassy scent and soft feel. Good mix of bracing mineral notes and agave sweetness. Tequila Cazadores.

Tequila Label Decoder

Blanco: The Tequila may be unaged, or aged for up to two months and still be considered blanco. Also called “silver” or plata.

Reposado: The Tequila “rested” in oak barrels from two months to one year.

Añejo: Tequila aged in oak barrels for a minimum of one year. Extra Añejo, or “extra old,” indicates that it has been aged for three years or more.

Mixto: If you see this, put the bottle back on the shelf. It means the spirit is not 100% agave. Bottom line: This is a shortcut to Hangover City.

Gold: Also called joven abocado. This is a blanco Tequila with flavoring and coloring added, typically via caramel.

Diageo to build £50m Scotch whisky distillery

Diageo is to increase its Scotch whisky production with a new £50 million distillery in the Scottish Highlands.The distillery, which will create up to 20 new jobs, will be adjacent to the company’s existing distillery in Teaninich, near Alness, but will have its own name and identity.

The company also announced a major new phase of expansion to its Scotch whisky production in the Speyside area. The combined activity is a part of the £1 billion five-year investment plan launched last year.

The new Teaninch distillery will have the capacity to produce around 13 million litres of spirit per annum from 16 copper stills. An on-site bio-energy plant will also be constructed to convert co-products into green energy to power the distillery.

At the same time, Diageo also plans to invest £12 million in expanding the existing Teaninich distillery to almost double its capacity. The single malt whisky produced at the new distillery and at the expanded Teaninich distillery will be used in a range of Diageo’s blended Scotch whisky brands. (more…)
